Lent - Leap Year – Groundhog's Day Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 22nd. This year being a Leap Year we add a day to our calendar – February 29th! As you already heard Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, and declared that we will have 6 more weeks of Winter, but did you know that this custom started years ago in Germany. You may be surprised to learn that the traditions of Groundhog Day, February 2nd, have roots in Candlemas, an early Christian holiday. On this day, candles were blessed and distributed. It was believed that clear skies on Candlemas, February 2nd meant a long winter. When the tradition of Candlemas came to Germany, the story was enhanced. They predicted that if a hedgehog came out on Candlemas Day and saw his shadow, it would mean a long winter. When Germans settled in this country, they brought the tradition with them, and the weather prediction ability was bestowed upon the groundhog. Our HOPE Christian Academy The Our Hope Christian Academy will be holding a Kindergarten Open House on Wednesday February 8th at 7:00 p.m. If you know any youngsters starting Kindergarten in the fall and they might be interested in attending a private Christian School, please pass the word along to them.
